Why it matters
A single settlement instruction paired with its confirmation is straightforward. It becomes complex when triparty agents and CCPs act on the bank’s behalf: confirmations arrive asynchronously from outside, a single trade generates a chain of related messages, and the bank is no longer in full control of its own flows. Tracking what happened — and why — requires reading that message chain end to end.
The systems that process these flows are old. The people who built them are retiring, and the knowledge of how they truly work is leaving with them. At the same time, regulatory change, T+1 and platform consolidation mean these systems must be changed — faster than ever, with less internal expertise than before.
That combination — ageing systems, shrinking expertise, growing pressure — is what makes these projects genuinely difficult. It is also exactly where I work.
MT Analyze — Open Source SWIFT MT Tool
A personal side project — a desktop tool for analysing SWIFT MT messages per ISO 15022. Anyone working with MT files and only Windows built-in tools at hand quickly hits a wall: the MT 536 statement of transactions has a nested, tree-shaped structure that simply doesn’t flatten into a spreadsheet. I built the tool I was missing and released it open source so others in the same situation can use it too.
It runs locally with no dependencies, no cloud, and no installation hassle — your messages never leave your machine.
